Paulo Valero's charges are primed and ready for the challenge of the upcoming district season after getting some quality playing time in for his senoor-laden squad against formidable opponents.

The Winn Boys Basketball team this week had their previously scheduled bye week in order to recover from their first 21 games of the year. The Mavericks are currently sitting at 11-10 with key wins over SA Highlands, SA Burbank, Lytle, Uvalde, and their championship win at the Poteet Tournament over the Pearsall Mavericks. The Mavericks have one non-district game left on Tuesday December 21st at 1:00 pm at Winn High School before 9 days to get ready for the start of the district season. The Mavericks will open up district play on Thursday

December 30th at 11:00 AM vs the Southwest Legacy Titans and we want to invite the entire community to come out and support the Process as they look to make school history and make the playoffs for the first time in school history. It will be a difficult journey as District 28-5A is filled with many great teams, but it’s a task that this player/senior lead team is ready to take on.

The Mavericks quest for their first playoff berth will begin at home vs the Legacy Titans led by Head Coach Pete Abbott. Local Eagle Pass turned Titan Erick Aranda (Senior) will lead the Titans on defense while 6-3 Small Forward Michael Terrazas will lead them on offense.

The Mavericks will then travel back to back games once they are back from the break on January 4th and 7th to San Antonio Harlandale & Floresville. Harlandale is led by Head Coach Eric De Los Santos. The Indians are returning co-new comer of the year in Sophomore Jonathan Regalado and are led by 6-0 Jr Saxon Langenberg. Floresville is led by Head Coach Damon Liverett and their home court advantage is unlike any other in the district. The Tigers don't have a main player to fall back on, but they have a really good starting 5 that has gelled together and are putting wins together this year. The Mavericks will close off the first 25% of district play with a home game on January 1th at Winn at 6:30 pm vs the Southwest Dragons. The Dragons are led by Head Coach Danny Stewart and returning 3 year letterman , 6-2 F Dion Saldivar. The Dragons have a total of 9 returning varsity players and will be looking to make a playoff push.

Games 5-8 will start off with the Mavs making a trip to San Antonio McCollum, led by Head Coach Marcus Alvarado.

Eagle Pass Winn Boys Basketball headed to the Alamo City on Thursday December 9th to the prestigious San Antonio ISD Tournament were schools from all around the state descended upon. The Winn Mavericks were first matched up vs the Belton Tigers (13-2).

Led by a plethora of seniors , the Tigers were heavy favorites but your local boys would not back down. The Mavericks started off with a 4-0 lead that extended through the end of the 1st quarter 21-20 led by 3 point specialist Ryan Rodriguez who hit a total of three daggers in the 1st and 5 overall for the game. The experienced Tigers led by 6'6 Senior TJ Johnson relied on their outside shooting and defensive length to take control in the 2nd quarter and take the first win of the tournament by a final score of 69-47. Josue Jimenez was able to contribute with 12 of his own points but it wasn't enough for the over-matched Mavericks who moved on to the consolation portion of the tournament.

The next day the Mavericks were matched up vs potential Bi-District playoff competition the Highlands Owls. The Mavericks came out a bit sluggish down 14-19 after the first, but a total of 4 Mavericks entered the scoring column and it was only a matter of time before their 'Strength In Numbers' mantra would take over.  A defensive switch to the 1-3-1 held the Owls to 10 points in the 2nd quarter and the Mavericks, led by Jovan Jimenez (23 points) and Angel Gomez (16 points) were able to take a 5 point lead into the half at 34-29. Some halftime adjustments from the Owls brought them back to life as Jonas Garza was able to score 15 of his 17 points in the 3rd quarter and lead his team to a 48-50 lead after the 3rd quarter. Some key defensive stops in the 4th led by Henry Suke and Cesar Juarez (9 points) and key free-throws being hit led the Mavericks as they were able to get one final stop at the buzzer to hold on to the 66-64 win and advance to the Consolation Semi-Finals.

The Semi-Finals saw them match up with another potential Bi-District playoff opponent in the Burbank Bulldogs in a rematch from earlier on in the year were the Mavericks lost by 1 at Burbank. Some key adjustments early frustrated the Bulldogs led by R. Salazar (32 points last game) and held him to 6 points in the first half. The Mavericks were able to jump on them early with a 21-16 lead after the 1st quarter but they knew it would take 32 minutes of hardwork to win this one. The Bulldogs cut into the lead and trailed by 3 at the half with a score of 41-38. The Mavericks experienced post presence led by Angel Gomez (15 points) led the way early. Chuy Rodriguez and Jovan Jimenez both put on a show in the 2nd half each scoring 18 points for the game and making key plays down the stretch. Robert Zapata (4 points was able to frustrate them inside, holding them to one shot consistently and key steals and lay-ups by Cesar Juarez (10 points) led the way all game and the Mavericks were able to take the win by the final score of 73-69. The Mavericks would move on to the Consolation Championship with their only loss coming against the Belton Tigers who had advanced to the Championship of the main bracket.

The United South Panthers, also 2-1 and with their only loss coming to Tournament Champions the Antonian Prep Apaches were ready for their championship game vs the Mavericks. This game was being played at the prestigious Alamo Convocation Center and the Mavericks were ready for battle coming out hot on offense and abel to hold their own on defense building an early 6-0 and 8-2 lead before some hot shooting by the Panthers allowed them to take a 12-8 lead at the end of the first. United South was relentless in the 2nd quarter from behind the arc knocking down a total of seven 3s in the 2nd quarter to build a lead they wouldn't relinquish and take the consolation championship by the final score of 66-46. Jose Balbuena and Julio Escobedo were able to contribute in this one off the bench for the Mavericks, but it wasn't enough to get them over the top.

After the game the SAISD Tournament host made the announcement that Sophomore Jovan Jimenez had been chosen by the coaches in the tournament as one of 10 All Tournament Selections. Jovan led the way for the Mavericks with a total of 60 points throughout the 4 games.
